Ripa, Cesare, fl. 1600 · 1603 · In Roma : Appresso Lepido Facij · 171 pictures

Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, printed in Rome by Lepido Facij in 1603, is an alphabetical handbook of allegorical figures compiled for painters, poets, and emblem designers. Small woodcuts show standing draped women personifying abstractions, each holding attributes like lamps, palm fronds, crowns, serpents, and books, framed by narrow columns of caryatid putti and coiled mermaid terms.
