Iconologia, overo Descrittione di diverse imagini cauate dall'antichità, & di propria inuentione,
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, printed in Rome by Lepido Facij in 1603, is an Italian handbook of allegorical figures compiled for painters, sculptors, poets and makers of devices. The 167 woodcuts show standing personifications holding identifying attributes — palm fronds, serpents, lamps, staffs, animals — each framed by grotesque caryatid or fruit-garland side columns usable as ornamental borders.
