Iconologia, overo Descrittione di diverse imagini cauate dall'antichità, & di propria inuentione,
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, printed in Rome by Lepido Facij in 1603, is an alphabetical handbook of allegorical figures compiled for painters, sculptors, poets and courtly designers of devices. Small square woodcuts show standing personifications holding attributes—flaming vessels, sceptres, yokes, sheaves, a seated dog—each framed by grotesque columns of stacked putti, masks and vases usable as borders or stock emblem figures.
