Iconologia, overo, Descrittione d'imagini delle virtu', vitii, affetti, passioni humane, corpi celesti, mondo e sue parti
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, printed by Pietro Paolo Tozzi in Padua in 1611, is an Italian handbook of allegorical figures — virtues, vices, passions, celestial bodies and regions of the world — compiled for painters, sculptors and poets. Each entry carries a square woodcut of a standing draped female personification with identifying attributes, flanked by candelabra-and-mask border strips useful as ornament and framing stock.
