Iconologie par figures; ou, Traité complet des allégories, emblêmes, etc. Ouvrage utile aux artistes, aux amateurs, et peuvent servir à l'éducation des jeunes personnes
A four-volume French dictionary of allegory compiled by Hubert-François Gravelot and Charles-Nicolas Cochin, issued in Paris by the engraver Lattré in 1791 as a reference for artists, amateurs and the instruction of young people. Each plate sets a personified virtue or condition in a ruled frame above a lettered nameplate, drawn in fine copperplate hatching, with attributes—helmet and torch, geese, bars, plough, ruins—that can be lifted as symbol shorthand.
