Jean-Baptiste Boudard's Iconologie, printed in Vienna by Johann Thomas Trattner in 1766, is an alphabetical dictionary of allegorical figures compiled for writers, poets and artists needing correct personifications. Each entry carries a small upright etching of a single draped or half-nude figure, seated or standing with an attribute, modelled in fine parallel hatching against ruled horizontal skies.
