Ignatius : insignium, epigrammatum et elogiorum centuriis expressus
An emblem book on the life of Ignatius of Loyola by the Jesuit Carlo Bovio, printed in Rome in 1655 with Latin mottoes, epigrams and eulogies, made for Jesuit readers and devotional study. The 105 engravings are small emblem plates, each a scrolling strapwork cartouche with a lettered banderole framing a scene: a curtained altar, a shaft of light over water, a clockwork mechanism, a cross on a bare landscape, all built from close hatching that designers can lift as frames, ribbon banners and compact allegorical vignettes.
