Ikonografia Bogomateri
Nikodim Kondakov's Ikonografia Bogomateri, a scholarly survey of images of the Virgin published in St Petersburg in 1914 by the Imperial Academy of Sciences for historians of Byzantine, early Christian and Russian church art. The plates are grainy halftone photographs of frescoes, mosaics, catacomb paintings and panel icons, offering enthroned Virgins, haloed heads, angels and Annunciation groups with mottled, pitted surfaces and heavy black-and-white contrast.
