Ikonografia Bogomateri
A scholarly survey of Marian iconography by the Russian Byzantinist Nikodim Kondakov, issued in St. Petersburg in 1914 by the Imperial Academy of Sciences for art historians and students of Byzantine and Orthodox art. The 254 plates are halftone photographs of icons, repoussé metal revetments, mosaics and frescoes, giving frontal Virgin-and-Child compositions, haloes, Greek abbreviation monograms, jewelled borders and rows of small saint medallions, plus surfaces cracked and worn by age.
