Illustrated catalogue of a loan collection of portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Romney, Thomas Gainsborough, John Hoppner, Sir Henry Raeburn, and other artists.
An exhibition catalogue issued by the Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery in 1900, listing a loan collection of British portraits by Reynolds, Romney, Gainsborough, Hoppner, Raeburn and their contemporaries for gallery visitors and collectors. The plates are soft halftone reproductions of eighteenth-century oil portraits, mostly half-length sitters against clouded or dark grounds, with powdered hair, ruffled bodices, sashes and oval frames; useful for period costume reference, muted greyscale texture, and vignetted head-and-shoulders formats.
