Illvstrivm imagines
Andrea Fulvio's Illustrium imagines, printed by Jacopo Mazzocchi in Rome in 1517, presents Roman emperors, empresses and statesmen as coin portraits with short Latin biographies, made for antiquarians and collectors of ancient medals. Each page pairs a profile head in a circular medallion with an engraved woodcut frame of grotesques, winged sphinxes, putti, candelabra and acanthus, plus a ruled text panel ready for lettering.
