Francesco Scannelli's treatise on painting, in two books of theory and practice, printed at Cesena by Neri in 1657 for Italian painters, collectors and connoisseurs. The plates here are small letterpress ornaments cut in heavy black line: winged cherub heads, horned grotesque masks and scrolling tailpieces, usable as chapter breaks, spot motifs or coarse-grained typographic furniture.
