Francesco Scannelli's Il microcosmo della pittura, a two-book treatise on the theory and practice of Italian painting, printed at Cesena by Neri in 1657 for painters, connoisseurs and collectors. The plates are typographic woodcut ornaments from the press: winged cherub heads flanked by scrolling acanthus, headbands, tailpieces and initials in coarse black hatching, usable as rules, dividers and spot motifs.
