Illvstrivm imagines
Andrea Fulvio's Illustrium imagines, printed in Rome by Jacopo Mazzocchi in 1517 with woodcuts associated with Ugo da Carpi and Giovanni Battista Palumba, presented some 200 ancient rulers and notable Romans as coin portraits with short Latin lives, for humanist antiquaries and early collectors of Roman medals. Each page repeats one scheme: a profile head in a circular medallion with lettered legend, hung above a framed panel of text and flanked by candelabra ornament with griffins, sphinxes, acanthus and cornucopias; designers can lift the roundel portraits, the text cartouches, and the symmetrical border strips separately.
