Leonhard Euler's 1744 Latin treatise on the motion of planets and comets, printed in Berlin by Ambrosius Haude for astronomers and mathematicians, includes methods for determining orbits from a few observations and computations for the comets of 1680-81. The plates here are close crops of letterpress numeral tables, ruled columns and equation signs, overrun by heavy black ink blots and drips that read as abstract brush marks against the grid.
