The industrial arts of Scandinavia in the pagan time
A survey of Scandinavian metalwork and ornament before Christianization, written by Swedish archaeologist Hans Hildebrand and issued in London in 1883 for the Committee of Council on Education as a handbook for art students and museum visitors. The wood-engraved plates render brooches, mounts and buckles in fine hatched line, isolating each object on blank ground, so designers can lift interlaced beast forms, spiral bosses and ribbon knotwork as ready-made ornament or borders.
