An inquiry into the difference of style observable in ancient glass paintings : especially in England: with hints on glass painting

Winston, Charles, 1814-1864 · 1847 · Oxford : John Henry Parker · 19 pictures

Charles Winston's two-volume study of medieval English stained glass, published by John Henry Parker at Oxford in 1847 for antiquaries, architects, and glass painters attempting to revive the craft. The woodcuts isolate single details from windows \u2014 cusped and pointed arch heads, bead-and-circle borders, quatrefoil rosettes, rows of crescents \u2014 drawn as flat black shapes against white with hatched edging, giving designers clean, high-contrast motifs and border repeats that read at small sizes.
