An inquiry into the origin and early history of engraving : upon copper and in wood, with an account of engravers and their works, from the invention of chalcography by Maso Finiguerra, to the time of Marc' Antonio Raimondi
William Young Ottley's 1816 London history of engraving on copper and wood, printed for John and Arthur Arch, traces the craft from Maso Finiguerra to Marcantonio Raimondi for collectors and connoisseurs. Its plates are facsimile copies of fifteenth-century woodcuts and line engravings: haloed saints, annunciation angels, wise and foolish virgins, banderoles of blackletter text, and hatched drapery under arcaded architecture.
