Philosophy in sport made science in earnest; being an attempt to illustrate the first principles of natural philosophy by the aid of the popular toys and sports of youth

Paris, John Ayrton, 1785-1856 · 1857 · London : John Murray · 1 picture

A popular-science reader by the physician John Ayrton Paris, published by John Murray in London in 1857, explaining mechanics and natural philosophy to children through kites, tops, and other toys in the form of conversations between a vicar, Mr. Seymour, and young Tom. The sampled plates are close crops of letterpress text, with quoted dialogue, indented paragraphs and small-caps names on browned, foxed paper; useful as period type specimens, textured backgrounds, and cut-up quotation fragments.
