Adolf Furtwängler's Intermezzi (Leipzig and Berlin, 1896) collects short art-historical studies of ancient sculpture and relief, written in German for archaeologists and museum scholars. Plates mix halftone photographs of marble and terracotta heads, lit from one side against plain grounds, with pen-drawn copies of worn stone reliefs whose hatched backgrounds and frame borders read as flat graphic shapes.
