International studio
The International Studio, the New York edition of the London art magazine The Studio, began in 1897 and carried monthly criticism, design surveys and plates for artists, architects and collectors. The 527 pictures are mostly halftone reproductions of contemporary paintings and drawings — tonal landscapes with heavy tree masses, dim river banks, figures on garden terraces — useful for soft-edged atmospheric backgrounds and grey-scale texture.
