A French architectural treatise on building well and at low cost, written by the royal architect Philibert de l'Orme and printed in Paris in 1576 for masons, master builders and patrons of construction. The plates combine geometric line diagrams of vaults, trompes and stone-cutting with woodcut initials framed in acanthus scroll, flowers and grotesque beasts, giving designers both technical drawing and ready-made drop caps in coarse black line.
