Iohannis de Brunes I.C. Emblemata of Zinne-werck : voorghestelt, in Beelden, ghedichten, en breeder uijt-legginghen, tot uijt-druckinghe, en verbeteringhe van verscheijden feijlen onser eeuwe
A Dutch emblem book by the Middelburg jurist Johan de Brune, reissued in Amsterdam by Jan Jacobsz Schipper in 1661, pairing engraved scenes with verses and long prose commentary on the vices of the age for Protestant readers. The 55 small horizontal plates, after Adriaen van de Venne, show everyday interiors and landscapes in dense cross-hatching: tiled rooms with heavy curtains, figures in ruffs and broad hats, dogs, birdcages and burning fields, useful for period costume, furnished room settings and dark-toned figure groups.
