Iohannis de Brunes I.C. Emblemata of Zinne-werck : voorghestelt, in Beelden, ghedichten, en breeder uijt-legginghen, tot uijt-druckinghe, en verbeteringhe van verscheijden feijlen onser eeuwe
A Dutch emblem book by the Zeeland jurist and moralist Johan de Brune, printed in Amsterdam by Jan Jacobsz Schipper in 1661, pairing engraved emblems with verses and prose commentary that correct the vices of the age for a literate Protestant readership. The plates are small, densely cross-hatched engravings of everyday Dutch life — courtship groups in ruffs and slashed doublets, a man weighing goods in a cluttered kitchen, a night duel on cobblestones — useful for period costume, tiled and beamed interiors, and figure groups set in deep one-point perspective.
