Iohannis de Brunes I.C. Emblemata of Zinne-werck : voorghestelt, in Beelden, ghedichten, en breeder uijt-legginghen, tot uijt-druckinghe, en verbeteringhe van verscheijden feijlen onser eeuwe
A Dutch emblem book by the Zeeland jurist and moralist Johan de Brune, printed by Jan Jacobsz Schipper in Amsterdam in 1661, pairing engraved emblem plates with verses and prose commentary on the vices of the age for a literate Protestant readership. The small copperplates show everyday seventeenth-century interiors and streets — card tables, dancing parties, courtship, a nocturnal duel, birdcages and tiled floors — drawn in dense cross-hatching with deep blacks, useful for period costume (ruffs, wide hats, slashed doublets), silhouetted figure groups, and dark-ground vignette framing.
