Iosephi Mariae Suaresij episcopi vasionensis Praenestes antiquae libri duo
A Latin antiquarian study of ancient Praeneste in two books by bishop Joseph Marie Suarès, printed in Rome by Angelo Bernabò in 1655 for scholars of Roman art and topography. The plates here are square woodcut initials in which letters sit among scrolling foliage, birds, dragons and crouching figures, giving designers heavily inked drop caps with visible grain and worn edges.
