A treatise on architecture and fortification by the Sienese architect Pietro Cataneo, printed in Venice in 1554 by the sons of Aldus Manutius for builders, military engineers and patrons. The woodcuts include square historiated initials in which figures wade through water, kneel in rocky landscapes or crowd a boat, drawn in close parallel hatching against ruled skies, with bordered frames sized for reuse as drop caps or small vignettes.
