Italian castles and country seats
An account of visits to Italian castles, villas and noble families, written by the American traveller Tryphosa Bates Batcheller and published in New York by Longmans, Green in 1911 for English-speaking readers with an interest in aristocratic Italy. The 101 plates are sepia halftone photographs: symmetrical villa facades with arcades and balustrades, terraced gardens and cypress avenues, fortified castles on ridges above cultivated valleys, useful as soft-toned architectural backdrops, silhouette shapes and period photographic texture.
