Italian cities
Essays on Italian towns and their art by the American mural painter Edwin Howland Blashfield and his wife Evangeline Wilbour Blashfield, published by Scribner's in New York in 1902 for English-speaking travellers and readers of art history. The plates are dark halftone reproductions of frescoes and altarpieces, with crowded processional groups, haloed saints under trees, architectural niches and painted pilasters that yield silhouettes, ornament panels and heavy tonal backgrounds.
