Jacobean crewel work and traditional designs
A pattern book of Jacobean crewel embroidery issued around 1900 by the Manchester firm Briggs under the "Penelope" name, aimed at needleworkers copying seventeenth-century English designs. The colour plates show curling stems, lobed oak and acanthus leaves, carnations, pomegranates and fantastical blooms worked in wool on cream linen, usable as borders, repeats or single motifs.
