Japanese illustrations; a history of the arts of wood-cutting and colour printing in Japan

Strange, Edward Fairbrother, 1862-1929 · 1904 · London, G. Bell and sons · 39 pictures

A survey of Japanese woodblock cutting and colour printing written by Edward F. Strange, keeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and issued in London by G. Bell and Sons in 1904 for collectors, students and designers of the period. The plates reproduce pages and sheets by Japanese printmakers in black and white: crowded battle scenes of armoured figures, ink-brush studies of branches and travellers, and interiors drawn in steep diagonal perspective with sliding screens, verandah rails and ceiling beams, useful for line texture, asymmetric page layout and figure silhouettes.
