Japan : a record in colour
A colour-plate travel account of Japan published by A. & C. Black in London in 1901, painted by Mortimer Menpes and written up by his daughter Dorothy for British readers of illustrated travel books. The plates are loose watercolours reproduced by three-colour process, showing street stalls, shop fronts hung with Japanese lettered signs, paper umbrellas and figures in kimono against pale washed-out grounds, useful for muted period colour, soft-edged figure groups and signboard lettering.
