Joachimi Camerarii Symbolorum et emblematum, centuriae quatuor ..
Joachim Camerarius's four centuries of symbols and emblems, a Latin emblem book of plants, animals, birds and fishes first issued in Nuremberg in the 1590s and reprinted at Mainz in 1668 for scholarly readers who used such images as moral and natural-historical mottoes. Each page carries a small round copperplate in a beaded border: a single creature or plant set in a hatched landscape of conical hills, farmhouses, reeds and banked clouds, with dense parallel-line skies, crescent moons and suns; useful for circular vignettes, animal spot illustrations and engraved texture.
