Joannes Michaelis von der Ketten ... Apelles symbolicus
Apelles symbolicus is a two-volume Latin emblem handbook by Johannes Michael von der Ketten, printed in Amsterdam and Danzig in 1699 by the Janssonio-Waesbergios firm for preachers, writers and scholars hunting mottoes and moral figures. The small square copperplate engravings, in the Dutch manner of Luyken, set single figures against landscapes and interiors—a veiled woman at a smoking altar, an armoured rider before a walled town with ships burning offshore, a smith at his anvil, a man and dog under a windmill—with fine hatched skies and dense cross-hatched shadow useful for vignettes, spot illustration and emblem borders.
