John Cassell's Art treasures exhibition: containing engravings of the principal masterpieces of the English, Dutch, Flemish, French, and German schools
A picture-book record of the 1857 Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition, issued by the popular London publisher John Cassell in 1858 for a general middle-class audience buying cheap illustrated art volumes. Its 317 wood engravings copy paintings from the English, Dutch, Flemish, French and German schools: domestic interiors by lamplight, costumed figure groups, hunting and riding parties, and wooded landscapes with villagers, all rendered in dense cross-hatching with strong tonal contrast and captions naming the original painter.
