Journalism versus art

Eastman, Max, 1883-1969 · 1916 · New York : A.A. Knopf · 15 pictures

Max Eastman's 1916 polemic for A.A. Knopf in New York, arguing that magazine editors were degrading American illustration, addressed to artists, editors and general readers of the period. The eighteen plates reproduce work by others — Daumier's smudged crayon lithographs of Chinese patrols, Arthur B. Davies' white figures writhing on solid black grounds, and captioned pen cartoons by Arthur Young — offering high-contrast figure studies, reversed-out line, and dialogue-caption layouts.
