Kunstformen der Natur
Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, issued in ten parts by the Bibliographisches Institut in Leipzig and Vienna from 1899 to 1904, presented marine invertebrates and microorganisms as lithographed plates for artists, designers and educated general readers. Each plate arranges diatoms, medusae, shells and brachiopods symmetrically against dark or tinted grounds, giving radial rosettes, ribbed fans and tentacled silhouettes usable as ornament.
