Kunst und Religion : ein Versuch über die Möglichkeit neuer religiöser Kunst
An essay by the German art historian Gustav Friedrich Hartlaub on whether a new religious art was possible, published by Kurt Wolff in Leipzig in 1919 for readers of art criticism and contemporary Expressionism. The 77 plates are monochrome halftones of paintings, drawings and prints of biblical scenes — entombments, mourners, tumbling crowds of bodies — rendered in smudged tonal masses, heavy contour and steep tilted space, useful for grainy figure groups, hand and face studies, and dark-ground textures.
