Labyrinte de Versailles
A description of the labyrinth garden at Versailles, with verses by Isaac de Benserade and text by Charles Perrault, engraved by Sébastien Le Clerc and printed at the Imprimerie royale in Paris in 1677 for the French court and garden visitors. The forty-five plates show the labyrinth's fountains one by one, each a basin of animals from Aesop's fables set against dense walls of clipped trees and trellis, with jets of water drawn as fine vertical lines; useful for engraved foliage texture, fountain and basin profiles, and small animal figures in silhouette.
