A survey of caricature and caricaturists written by Émile Bayard and published by Delagrave in Paris in 1900, aimed at French readers interested in the history of comic and satirical drawing. The 178 plates reproduce pen, crayon and lithographic sketches by nineteenth-century French draughtsmen: stooping men in top hats and frock coats, ragged street types, grinning faces built from loose hatching, with figures set against blank paper and no background, useful for character studies, gesture references and line textures.
