An 1853 Philadelphia instruction manual from J. & J.L. Gihon teaching women millinery, mantua making, embroidery, appliqué, canvas-work, knitting, netting and crochet. Line engravings give full-size embroidery patterns of scrolling leaves, wheat ears and star-like flowers, plus diagrams of ruffled caps and bonnets with tie strings, useful as repeating border motifs, corner sprigs or outline ornament for monograms and endpapers.
