The Ladies' self instructor in millinery and mantua making, embroidery and appliqué, canvas-work, knitting, netting, and crochet-work

1853 · Philadelphia : J. & J.L. Gihon · 32 pictures

A mid-century American needlework manual issued by J. & J.L. Gihon of Philadelphia in 1853, teaching millinery, mantua making, embroidery, canvas-work, knitting, netting and crochet to women working at home. The plates are small black-and-white woodcuts of counted stitch patterns drawn on square grids, giving repeating diagonal lattices, chevrons, cross motifs and blocky geometric fills that convert directly into tiling patterns, borders and pixel-grid ornament.
