A needlework instruction manual by Matilda Marian Pullan, issued in New York by Dick & Fitzgerald in 1858 for women working embroidery, netting, lace and knitting at home. The wood-engraved diagrams show white stitch patterns reversed out of dense black grounds: swagged scallops, diagonal lattices with dropped loops, netted mesh, and rows of wheel-like rosettes usable as repeat tiles, borders and monochrome motifs.
