A needlework instruction manual by Matilda Marian Pullan, published in New York by Dick & Fitzgerald in 1859 for women working embroidery, applique and lace at home. Small square and round wood engravings show white stitch patterns reversed out of dense black grounds: open grids, darned squares, lattice fills and a wheel-shaped lace medallion usable as ornaments, tiles or repeat motifs.
