A scholarly study by Alfred Maury of magic, astrology, and surviving pagan superstition from antiquity through the Middle Ages, published in Paris by Didier et cie in 1864 for an educated French readership of historians and antiquarians. The single illustration is a wood-engraved chapter headpiece: two putti flanking a scrolled cartouche with an entwined monogram, topped by a covered urn and trailing foliate arabesques, usable as a symmetrical rule-breaker, masthead ornament, or monogram frame.
