Restif de La Bretonne's epistolary novel of a country girl ruined in Paris, issued in 1784 with a Hague imprint and sold by the widow Duchesne, with plates after Louis Binet for French readers of sentimental fiction. The images gathered here are letterpress ornaments rather than scenes: small woodcut headpieces and tailpieces of flower bouquets, wheat and laurel sprays, a radiant sun face, and a stippled rocaille cartouche, usable as chapter breaks, borders and spot devices.
