La peinture française au XIXe siècle
A survey of nineteenth-century French painting written by George Besson and issued in Paris by the photographic art publisher Braun, aimed at French readers and students of art history. The plates are monochrome halftone reproductions of paintings and drawings: crowded lamplit interiors, a nightmare scene of sprawled figures and drapery, a seated woman in black velvet and lace, theatre-box spectators sketched in loose line, useful for deep-shadow tonal grounds, period costume and gesture.
