A French treatise on emblems and heraldic devices by the Jesuit scholar Claude-François Ménestrier, printed in Paris in 1682 for antiquaries, heralds, and makers of mottoes. The plates are small rectangular woodcuts, coarsely cut and reused from older stock: birds in trees, church towns under banded skies, comets and lightning falling on prone figures, with clouds and ground built from dense parallel hatching that designers can lift as ready-made vignettes.
