A treatise on the imprese, or personal devices, written by the Sienese academician Scipione Bargagli and printed by Luca Bonetti in Siena in 1578 for courtiers and literary academies debating how such devices should be made. The plates are small oval copper engravings, each ringed by a Latin motto in capitals, enclosing a plumb level, a sundial with a radiant human-faced sun, a mirror and set square, or a swelling sea below hatched sky, offering ready-made emblem roundels, banded frames, and line-hatched landscape shorthand.
