A treatise on the making and reading of emblems by the Jesuit scholar Claude-François Menestrier, published at Lyon in 1662 by Benoist Coral, with plates designed by the painter Thomas Blanchet and engraved by Johann Jakob Thurneysen for readers devising devices, heraldry and festival decoration. The engravings set allegorical figures on crowned columns, rocky grottoes with fountains, and rusticated triumphal arches loaded with trophies, putti and garlands, giving designers ready-made ornamental frames, pedestals and emblematic scenery in fine open line.
